Kcal and calories are the same number

If you have been searching for a kcal tracker app and getting calorie counters back, nothing has gone wrong. A kilocalorie and a food Calorie are the same unit. UK and European labels print "kcal" because the labelling rules require it, US labels print "Calories" with a capital C, and 250 kcal is 250 Calories either way. There is no conversion to do and no setting to change.

So any app on this page will track what you want. What separates them is where their numbers come from, and that turns out to be a messier question than the marketing suggests.

What the research says about tracker accuracy

Nearly every comparison sorts these apps into two bins: the serious ones with a food database you search, and the AI ones where you point a camera and hope. The first bin gets treated as measurement, the second as a guess.

The published research does not support that split.

An Italian team ran five of the largest database apps against a validated food-composition reference, using each one for two weeks. FatSecret, Lifesum, MyFitnessPal, Yazio and Melarossa all underestimated total energy, most of them underestimated fat, and the authors concluded that the leading nutrition apps "present critical issues in assessing the intake of energy and nutrients".1 The causes they identified were in the databases: food items not matched to the country's composition tables, and user-created entries that nobody checks.

A 2026 study put Yazio against professional dietary software on identical food entries. The app came out 115 kcal a day lower on average, with limits of agreement wide enough that any single day could sit much further off, and it missed protein by around 20 g.2 That is a search-and-log app, entered carefully, by researchers who do this for a living.

Now the photo side. A Japanese group photographed 15 weighed hospital meals under controlled lighting, then had 10 registered dietitians and 10 AI models estimate them. For energy and carbohydrate the better models matched the dietitians, correlating above 0.8 with the weighed values and frequently landing inside 10%. Protein and fat were another matter. Every AI model overestimated fat by more than 20%.3 The authors call this the invisible nutrient problem, and the reason is obvious once you picture it: cooking oil does not show up in a photograph.

The finding I keep coming back to is from a third study. Researchers ran 195 dishes through a vision model four ways: photo alone, photo with a short standard description, photo with a full ingredient list, and the ingredient list with no photo at all. Error dropped each time more context was added, and rose again when the image was taken away.4 Photo and words together beat either one by itself, which is worth knowing whichever app you end up with.

Neither category is measuring your food. A database app looks up somebody's estimate of a food resembling yours. A photo app estimates from what it can see. Getting a true number needs a kitchen scale and a laboratory. What these apps are actually good for is consistency, which is a less impressive claim and a more useful one.

How I compared them

I build MyPlate, which is one of the apps below. Read the rest of this page knowing that. I have tried to write it so you can check the claims instead of trusting me, and where MyPlate loses I have said so.

Four things separate these apps once the novelty has worn off:

  • What it costs for a year, after the introductory offer expires.
  • What the free tier actually lets you do, rather than what the store listing implies.
  • Where its numbers come from, and whether that source has ever been checked by anyone.
  • What happens to your food log.

How fast it is to log a meal matters more than any of those, but I have no honest way to measure it across eight apps, so I have described how each one works and left the scoring to you. Prices are what I could verify on the US App Store in August 2026. All of these apps run regional and promotional pricing, so check yours before subscribing.

The photo trackers

MyPlate, $39.99 a year

Mine, so here is the whole picture including the parts that will irritate you.

You either photograph the meal or type what you ate, and both go to the same vision model. You can do both at once, which is the configuration that study found most accurate,4 and it is the reason the text box exists rather than being a fallback for when the camera fails. Your daily target comes from the Mifflin-St Jeor equation scaled by activity and goal, and it never drops below 1,200 kcal for women or 1,500 for men, a floor taken from the NIH clinical guidelines on obesity.5 The arithmetic is on the sources page with its citations, and you can run it yourself in the calorie calculator without installing anything.

There is no account. Your meals and weights are stored in a database on the phone and never leave it. A photo goes to the AI service to be analysed and is not kept. That is why MyPlate is the only "No" in the account column, and it is the part of the app I would defend hardest.

What it does not do: there is no food database and no barcode scanner, so a packet with the numbers printed on the side still has to be described rather than scanned. The free tier gives you the plan and then asks you to subscribe before your first meal, which is stricter than most of this list. It is iPhone only, English only, and has no Apple Watch app, no widget, and no Apple Health integration. It carries 4.05 stars from 19 ratings, which is a real rating from a small number of people rather than a polished one from millions.

Cal AI, about $29.99 a year

The app that made photo logging mainstream, and much larger than MyPlate. Point, shoot, adjust the numbers if they look wrong. Independent testing puts photo estimation in roughly the same accuracy band as everything else in this category, which matches what the peer-reviewed work found: fine on simple plated food, less so on mixed dishes where half the ingredients are hidden.3 It requires an account, and its pricing varies more than any other app here, so the figure above may not be the one you are shown.

The database trackers

Cronometer, $59.99 a year

The most rigorous of them, and the free tier is genuinely good: full macros plus more than 80 micronutrients, drawn largely from USDA FoodData Central rather than user submissions. If you have a clinical reason to watch iron or B12 or potassium, nothing else on this list comes close. The cost is the logging, which is slower and fussier than anything AI-driven.

FatSecret, $44.99 a year

The best free tier in the category if you measure it by what you can do without paying. Around five million food entries, unlimited logging, no daily cap. It was also one of the five apps in the Italian accuracy study, and it underestimated energy along with the rest.1

Lose It!, $79.99 a year

The largest database here at roughly seven million entries, and free logging is unlimited, which is more than MyFitnessPal now offers. The premium price is at the top of the market and it went up recently.

Yazio, $47.90 a year

Cheaper than most, and the free tier is the most restricted of the database apps: it locks macronutrient tracking behind the paywall, leaving a calorie-only counter. It is also the app with the most specific accuracy evidence against it, being the one measured at 115 kcal a day off professional software.2

MyFitnessPal, $79.99 a year

The default recommendation for a decade, and still the biggest. Two things have changed. The free tier now caps you at five food entries a day, which runs out somewhere around lunch on a normal day of eating. And its database is largely user-generated, which is precisely the mechanism the Italian researchers blamed for the errors they measured.1 The scale that makes it convenient is the same scale that makes it unverifiable.

The adaptive outlier

MacroFactor, $71.99 a year

Different enough that comparing it on price misses the point. It has no photo logging at all, and no free tier beyond a week's trial. What it does instead is watch your logged intake against your actual weight trend and recalculate what you are really burning, then adjust your targets weekly. Every other app on this page hands you a formula's guess at your expenditure and leaves it there.

If you log precisely and consistently, this is the most sophisticated thing in the category. If you do not, the algorithm is being fed noise and will act on it.

Which one should you pick

For most people asking the question, I would pick MyPlate, and not only because I wrote it. It is the cheapest annual subscription on the list at $39.99, it is the only one that works without an account or a server-side copy of your food log, and photographing a meal while typing a few words about it is the configuration the accuracy research came out best on.4 The targets behind it are published with their citations rather than described as proprietary.

Three readers should pick something else, and I would rather say so than pretend otherwise:

If you need micronutrients, take Cronometer. A photo cannot estimate your iron intake and MyPlate does not try. If you are not going to pay for a tracker at all, take FatSecret, because MyPlate's free tier will stop you before your first meal and MyFitnessPal's will stop you before dinner. And if you weigh your food, log every gram and want your targets to respond to what your body actually does, take MacroFactor.

If you eat a lot of packaged food with barcodes on it, any of the database apps will be faster than describing each item to an AI. That is a real advantage and MyPlate has no answer to it.

Common questions

Is a kcal tracker app the same as a calorie tracker app?

Yes. A kilocalorie is a food Calorie, so 250 kcal and 250 Calories are identical amounts of energy. UK and European food labels are required to print kcal, US labels print Calories, and the apps behave the same either way. Searching for one term and finding the other is a labelling convention, not a difference in product.

What is the best free kcal tracker app?

FatSecret, if free is a hard requirement. It allows unlimited logging with no daily cap across roughly five million food entries. Cronometer's free tier is the better one for anybody who needs micronutrients, since it includes more than 80 of them without paying. MyFitnessPal's free tier caps you at five foods a day, and MyPlate's gives you a calorie plan but asks you to subscribe before logging a meal.

Are AI photo calorie counters accurate?

For calories and carbohydrate, yes, roughly as accurate as a registered dietitian looking at the same plate. In a controlled study of 15 weighed meals the better AI models correlated above 0.8 with the weighed values and often landed within 10%. Fat is the weak point: every model tested overestimated it by more than 20%, because oil and butter are invisible in a photograph. Accuracy improves measurably when you add a written description alongside the photo.

Which kcal tracker app is the most accurate?

None of them is accurate in the sense of measuring your food, and the apps with searchable databases are not the safe choice people assume. Five leading database apps tested against a validated food-composition reference all underestimated energy, and one commercial app was measured 115 kcal a day below professional dietary software on identical entries. Pick for consistency and for whether you will keep using it, because those affect your results far more than the estimation method does.

Do I need to pay for a kcal tracker app?

No. FatSecret and Cronometer both have free tiers you can use indefinitely, and Lose It! allows unlimited free logging. Paying gets you faster logging, AI photo estimation, or adaptive targets depending on the app. Whether that is worth $40 to $80 a year depends on whether the friction of manual searching is what stops you tracking, which for a lot of people it is.

The bottom line

A systematic review of 59 weight-loss trials found that dietary self-monitoring worked whether people recorded everything or only part of what they ate. Both the high-intensity and low-intensity approaches produced significantly more weight loss than the control groups, though the authors noted that inconsistent adherence measures across the studies limited what they could conclude about which method is better.6

The size of the effect is worth being honest about. A meta-analysis of smartphone weight-loss apps found losses peaking at 2.18 kg around three months and easing back to 1.63 kg at twelve. The authors' own summary was that these apps work but that "their effects are minimal in their current states".7 No app on this page is going to change that number much. What it can change is whether you are still logging in month six, which is the only variable any of them really controls.

So pick on friction rather than on features. The tracker you will actually open after a bad week beats the one with the better database.

One last thing. If tracking is making you anxious, if you find yourself under-eating to make a number work, or if logging has started to feel like something you have to do rather than something you chose, stop and talk to a doctor or a registered dietitian. That applies to every app here, mine included.
